Negotiating
Los Angeles via the transit system has a unique flavor all its own –
there is a beauty, mystery and vibrancy in the experience. As buses and
trains amble along their predetermined paths, small moments are shared
between individuals who make up the heart of the city. Some engage in
small conversations with each other; others, lost in their own world,
gaze out a row of side windows. The view from the bus becomes a blur of
lines, colors and shapes as the landscape whizzes by. This project is
about that experience. The spray painted and stenciled works are derived
from video footage shot while riding on the Los Angeles MTA. I take the
stills from that video and then translate them into stencils, which are
finally spray painted onto a public surface. The work is temporary, like
much of the visual information that litters the Los Angeles landscape.
It exists for a moment in time only to be obliterated and replaced by
something else. |
